Leaking Cistern
If you can hear water running into your toilet, or you can hear your toilet fill up randomly, then you may have a leaking cistern. There are two main components of a cistern, the inlet valve which fills the cistern and the outlet rubber which holds the water in there until it’s flushed, both seals are rubber and eventually wear down and need replacing. We’ve fixed thousands of toilets over the years, give us a call and one of our expert plumbers will be there ASAP!

This is generally caused by a leaking outlet rubber. When the outlet rubber that stops all of the water in the cistern from going down the bowl starts to wear down it will leak, if it starts to leak the level in the cistern will start to go down, once the level has dropped enough then the float valve inside the cistern will activate and it will start to fill the tank back up. This is why sometimes you may hear the tank fill up when it hasn’t been used, a toilet service will fix this issue.
You can generally just change the cistern without replacing the toilet, we do this all the time for our clients when the cistern starts to look old and weathered. However, some toilets need a specific cistern that is designed for that toilet, if it is very old, we may not be able to get a replacement and you would then need to replace the whole toilet suite for a new one.
Yes, once we have replaced your toilet, we will removed the old toilet and all the rubbish from site
There are two main reasons why a toilet will run.
- Leaking outlet rubber – this is the rubber seal that seals all the water in the cistern, as this rubber gets old it starts to perish, once it has perished enough it will begin to allow water to pass into the bowl.
- Leaking inlet valve – Every toilet has an inlet valve, this is simply just a valve with a float that fills the cistern up with water, as these valves get old the float no longer activates the valve and the cistern will overfill, when the cistern overfills it will flow down an overflow pipe and run into the bowl.
Both of these components are replaced in a cistern service, so if you have a running toilet give us a call and one of our friendly plumbers will be there ASAP!
